REAL ID Update: What Travelers Need to Know
If you plan to travel domestically within the United States, it’s time to check your ID. Starting May 7, 2025, all U.S. travelers aged 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.
What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a federally approved form of identification with enhanced security features. You can recognize it by the gold or black star on the top corner of your ID.
How to Get a REAL ID:
Check Your Current ID: Look for the star in the top corner to see if it’s already REAL ID-compliant.
Visit Your State’s DMV: Bring the required documents, which typically include:
Proof of identity (e.g., a valid passport or birth certificate)
Social Security Number (e.g., Social Security card or W-2)
Two proofs of residency (e.g., utility bills or bank statements)
Submit Your Application: Fees and processing times vary by state, so check with your local DMV for details.
Alternatives to REAL ID
If you don’t have a REAL ID, you can still use a valid passport, military ID, or other TSA-approved forms of identification for domestic flights.
Don’t wait until the last minute—lines and appointment wait times are expected to increase as the deadline approaches. Make sure you’re ready well ahead of May 7, 2025!
Update on the ETIAS Requirement
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. It's a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt travelers to the Schengen States. ETIAS is a security measure to identify potential risks to public health and safety.
How does ETIAS work?
You apply for ETIAS before traveling to the EU
Border guards check your ETIAS and other travel documents when you arrive
ETIAS is linked to your passport and is valid for up to three years or until your passport expires
You can use ETIAS to enter the Schengen States (30 European Countries) for short-term stays, usually up to 90 days in any 180-day periodThe ETIAS(EU Travel Information & Authorisation System) aka European travel visa requirement has been postponed and is expected to start in Mid 2025. At that time, the expected turnaround time is 96 hours and the implementation of the change in the European travel rules will be gradual.
Transitional period: travelers should apply for an ETIAS travel authorisation
The launch of ETIAS in mid-2025 will be followed by a transitional period of at least six months. This means that, for travel during this time, travelers should already apply for their ETIAS travel authorisation, but those without one will not be refused entry as long as they fulfil all remaining entry conditions.
Grace period: travelers must have an ETIAS travel authorisation
During this period travelers must have an ETIAS travel authorisation to enter the 30 European countries.
There is an exception: only those coming to Europe for the first time since the end of the transitional period will be allowed to enter without an ETIAS provided they fulfil all remaining entry conditions. All other travelers will be refused entry if they do not hold an ETIAS travel authorisation.
The grace period will last at least six months.
